Il centro storico di Chiari, non percepibile dal livello stradale, ha una forma circolare molto particolare, con strate a raggiera che conducono tutte nella piazza principale dove insiste il Duomo e la Torre Campanaria.Il primo nucleo abitativo si ebbe durante l’inizio del VII secolo in epoca Longobarda. Lungo la sua storia, Chiari è stata Assediata, conquistata, distrutta e ricostruita, ovvero nell’ordine da Federico II, Ezzelino da Romano, Guelfi e Ghibellini. Nel 1429 fu occupata dalla Serenissima e donata al Conte di Carmagnola, che la suddivise in quattro quadre che erano Zeveto, Marengo, Cortezzano e Villatico. Qui si svolse la sanguinosa battaglia di Chiari nel 1701 dove morirono più di 5000 persone. Un numero enorme in quel periodo.
Da visitare sono il Duomo dove al suo interno si trova la cripta di Sant’Agape, la Torre Civica alta 55 metri, punto di riferimento da ogni lato della città, la Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, la Villa Mazzotti, la Pinacoteca Repossi, la Biblioteca Morcelliana e molti altri edifici di culto.
The historic center of Chiari, not perceptible from street level, has a very particular circular shape, with radial streets that all lead to the main square where the Duomo and the Bell Tower stand. The first inhabited nucleus occurred during the beginning of the 7th century in the Lombard period. Throughout its history, Chiari has been besieged, conquered, destroyed and rebuilt, that is, in order by Frederick II, Ezzelino da Romano, Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1429 it was occupied by the Serenissima and donated to the Count of Carmagnola, who divided it into four squares which were Zeveto, Marengo, Cortezzano and Villatico. Here the bloody battle of Chiari took place in 1701 where more than 5000 people died. A huge number in that period.
The points of interest to visit are: the Cathedral where inside there is the crypt of Sant’Agape, the Civic Tower 55 meters high, a reference point from all sides of the city, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Villa Mazzotti, the Repossi Art Gallery, the Morcelliana Library and many other places of worship.
