Brescello ha una storia antichissima anche se da molti è conosciuta soprattutto per le storie di Peppone e Don Camillo del Guareschi. Fu fondata dai Cenomani attorno al VII secolo a.C. Nel II A.C. i romani abitarono l’area e la chiamarono Brixellum. Divenne uno dei più importanti centri della pianura Padana, data la sua importante posizione strategica lungo il corso del Po. Brescello venne proclamata sede vescovile alla fine del IV secolo. San Genesio fu il primo vescovo. Vari assedi e riconquiste tra i Bizantini e Longobardi, che a fasi alterne rasero al suolo la città, con l’aggiunta di inondazioni resero la città quasi irriconoscibile. Solo nel 1479, quando andò nelle mani dei duchi d’Este, essa fu fortificata con una cinta muraria pentagonale essendo la sua posizione nel bel mezzo dei confini di diversi ducati potentissimi.
Brescello, come dicevamo, è stato il set di ben 5 film di Peppone e Don Camillo. A loro è dedicato un museo e le statue nel centro del paese. Tra questi addirittura un carrarmato usato per uno di questi film.

Brescello, as we said, was the set of 5 films by Peppone and Don Camillo. A museum and statues in the town center are dedicated to them. Among these even a tank used for one of these films.
