Il paese fu fondato nell’XI secolo da Oderisio I ed ampliato da Oderisio II, abate del Monastero di San Giovanni in Venere come forte di rifugio per i monaci dell’abbazia stessa. In effetti il primo documento in cui viene menzionato il paese è del 1º marzo 1046 in un diploma dell’imperatore Enrico III per il monastero stesso. Nel 1346 i cittadini di Lanciano espugnarono il paese per rubare il grano ivi contenuto. Nel 1381 un nuovo saccheggio con susseguente incendio interessò il paese da parte di Ugone Ursini conte di Manoppello. Nel 1453 ebbe una zecca dove Innico d’Avalos faceva coniare oro, argento e rame a suo nome. Il terremoto del 1626 distrusse gran parte delle mura.
The town was founded in the 11th century by Oderisio I and enlarged by Oderisio II, abbots of the Monastery of San Giovanni in Venere as a stronghold of refuge for the monks of the abbey itself. In fact, the first document in which the town is mentioned is dated 1 March 1046 in a diploma from Emperor Henry III for the monastery itself. In 1346 the citizens of Lanciano stormed the town to steal the grain contained therein. In 1381 a new sacking with subsequent fire affected the town by Ugone Ursini, Count of Manoppello. In 1453 he had a mint where Innico d’Avalos had gold, silver and copper minted in his name. The earthquake of 1626 destroyed most of the walls of the town.
